Mumei
A mysterious girl claiming to have come from "Koutetsujou". During the events occurred near Ranshin City, numerous people witnessed her combat ability no weaker to that of an Ascender, but her identity, background, and the truth behind her ability remain a mystery. At present, Mumei is temporarily traveling with the Eternal while searching for a way to return to her train.
As an "Outlander," Mumei has evidently been living in a world completely different from all Bonfire Cities. Because of that, she caused quite a few misunderstandings after coming aboard the Eternal. She knew nothing about electronic devices; her understanding of firearms remained at the flintlock from centuries ago; and when seeing new Bonfire Cities, she would look in utter disbelief and astonishment. To quote the words of some of the crew members familiar with her, she was "virtually from ancient times."
Aside from her interest in things like food and accommodation, the most memorable incident occurred was when she exclaimed while passing by the dining carriage: "You get as much rice as you want?!" It seemed that where she was born, even having one proper meal a day was tough.
From the outside, Mumei looks like one of the youngest crew members aboard. Everyone wanted to know her better, so they frequently probed her about what she liked to eat or do. But when it came to food, Mumei acted sort of indifferent.
"Food that I like? Rice, I guess... But it's not what I need to fill my belly anyway. As long as— Don't pull me, Ikoma!"
...In any case, no matter the situation, she still gets along well with the people on the Eternal. Everyone has already regarded her as a comrade ever since the events around Ranshin City. Despite having witnessed her unforgettable and pretty much unflinching combat style, many people still see her as a regular child. Meanwhile, Mumei's attitude toward the Eternal's crew is certainly unusual. She won't reject their concern, but she doesn't express any signs of joy about it either. Instead, she behaves as though she's doing some kind of duty.
"I'm a bodyguard of the Eternal now. Since I've accepted payment, I should work, shouldn't I?"
"Waaaah~ A biiig scary Kabane is here!"
Mumei often plays with the children on the train while working. Unlike how she usually behaves, she cares a lot for children younger than her, particularly crying infants, and when coming across passengers who brings children, she tends to go forward and entertain the kids for a bit. Thanks to that, the Eternal has received compliments and gifts of appreciation from the passengers several times.
After putting a crying child to sleep, Mumei would typically bid their parent farewell with a grin, then skip back to the area where she's usually on standby - the corner of the crew carriage - and curl up to rest. Every time, she would look even lonelier than before.
On one such ordinary afternoon, Mumei disclosed to Conductor, who happened to be passing by, about what happened when she was still a child.
...
Like most children in her world, Mumei also had a normal life. Even though Kabanes were wreaking havoc in the outside world, life in the Eki was safe and sound, and she could still live in peace with her family, albeit having to go hungry sometimes.
However, the Ekis where humans lived were invaded by Kabanes one after another. The people who managed to survive on Hayajiros swarmed toward the Ekis still standing, and the survivors started clashing among themselves as they fought for the chance to live. Apart from strict Kabane inspections, people doubted, accused, and attacked each other, making them the foremost threat within Ekis.
It was during one such conflict that others doubted Mumei and her mother. Mumei's mother was stabbed to death at home when protecting the young Mumei from a soldier's blade. Afterward, the person who would change Mumei's life came. To repay that person for saving her and to obtain stronger powers, Mumei voluntarily became a Kabaneri and kept fighting to date.
...
"Meeting Ikoma on Koutetsujou... that isn't considered the past. That's the present. Being with everyone on Koutetsujou is the 'present' too.
"...How should I put it? Lots of things did happen thereafter. I made mistakes, then got hurt and healed, caused bad consequences... Many people died. But there were good things too. I don't know what the future will be like...
"Nonetheless, I know I have to keep going forward, as I still have dreams to fulfill! Whenever I see children on the Hayajiro, it's as if I can see myself through them. They're adorable, aren't they?
"It is also because of these children here that I'm positive no matter where it is, people are the same. There are good ones and bad ones; there are those who are welcomed and those who are despised... This will remain the same all around.
"Regardless, I've had a great time on the Eternal. Please continue taking care of me, Conductor."
I'm Mumei, temporarily serving as a bodyguard here. Ah, payment won't be necessary. Just provide me with adequate food and a place to sleep.
Gotcha. Where's the enemy? Oh, not a fight... coming.
I look different from human? But I am not a Kabane, though neither a human. Those like us are called "Kabaneri."
So it's a norm to fight in groups here... Mm, that's different from Koutetsujou! There, everybody used to hide aboard, while I get off and take care of things. And later I would take Ikoma along as my shield.
(sniffs) The carriage smells refreshing. No Kabane scent detected... Mm, it's safe for now!
This is an item used for working out and fingertip coordination. It's also called "kendama" here. See... Toss it upward, then it drops... Just like Kabanes' heads. ...Huh? Don't say such things? Why?
I've chatted with others on the train. Turns out, there's a painful process to go through when becoming an Ascender... Just like my curse, but I can endure it.
I saw that. You and Ikoma were crouching there studying those white tree branches. Just like those coroners under brother's command... Then, would you also lock the "Kills Ramens" in the carriage and inject all kinds of things in them?
Ikoma might be dumb most of the time, but he's really brave. He often dashes out while yelling at the top of his lungs. I guess you can describe him as all brawn and no brains!
I saw butterflies in the Bonfire City's "museum." ...When I was a child, mother told me that butterflies were formed by the souls of deceased people. Once a butterfly leaves, it means that person's soul has left too...
The name "Mumei" was given to me by brother, with the intention of making me leave my former life behind... But I still remember everything vividly. Would you like to know? My name, the original one.
Conductor, I'm hungry~ Could you stretch out your hand please? I'll handle the rest.
...Conductor, I've been thinking, is it possible that I could survive without relying on brother? ...Could I survive without fighting endlessly? H-Huh?! You said "of course"? Why is that?!
If I could stay long enough to spend Tanabata Festival here... I'll wish for something different from before. After all, isn't Tanabata just for making wishes!
Copy that~ Battle timer activate!
Got plenty of ammo left.
My blade is as sharp as ever.
Thorough purification!
Outta my way!
Time is up...
Pulling back... for now... Zzz...
...No one got bitten? So let's head back? *Yawn* I'm off to dreamland...
