Nabi, the Night Chains Executor, doesn't serve the large organization directly. She has another identity that she prioritizes over her role as Executor, and that is Hayabusa's bodyguard, even though it's a role assigned by someone else. She dresses simply and does things in a straightforward manner. She rarely engages in unnecessary interactions. You might occasionally see Nabi sitting by a window, sketching with a pencil — one of her few hobbies.
Since Nabi enjoys art, then why can't others ask her for a still life painting or portrait if they chance upon her while on the road? In fact, why don't they simply chat about art with her to become close to her?
The main reasons are as follows, provided by different people: If one abruptly approaches and asks her what she's doing, Nabi will stop drawing, look up, and answer all questions softly and calmly before resuming her work. If one is overly snoopy about her life and hobbies, she may stare at them, but that already intimidating-looking weapon is generally placed near her seat, glinting ominously... It's only understandable that most people will not have the courage to continue bothering her.
Still, there are people who get to chat normally with her, one of them naturally being Hayabusa. Cecil, who's raised in Night Chains like Nabi, is also pretty friendly with her. It seems she merely lacks the enthusiasm to do things or interact with others.
Nabi's lone kin had died from an accident. Many years ago, while Jose, the current mayor of Shoggolith City, was giving talks everywhere to run for office, Nabi's father worked for the man as a bodyguard until he eventually sacrificed himself to save his boss' life during an attack. It's hard to imagine what Nabi, who had always lived a serene life, must have felt when she got the news in school.
At the time, Jose immediately expressed regret for the death of this subordinate of his and promised to provide for Nabi until she came of age. He assured the young Nabi, "You can choose to do whatever you please," but she gave up on the chance to further her education and instead requested bodyguard training so as to become someone like her father.
After her certification, Nabi was assigned to be Hayabusa's guard by Jose. It isn't known what Hayabusa did, but it seems Nabi now prioritizes his orders over Jose's. Is this a choice she made on her own? And what's the reason behind this?
Nabi has a pet crow that anyone would think perfectly complements her image. But surprisingly, this crow was actually given to her by Cecil, who's highly sensitive to smell and has always been reluctant to come in contact with animals.
Cecil said that crows are a kind of intelligent bird that looks fully jet black to humans but stunningly colorful to other birds, and she thought they suit Nabi very well.
Nabi has yet to completely figure out why Cecil gave her the crow, but she felt her friend's thoughtfulness and blessing toward her even though at first, Cecil had only taken the initiative to befriend Nabi because of Nabi's exceptionally faint scent. As time passed, they gradually hit it off and became close friends.
Unlike Nabi, Cecil only looks aloof on the outside and is actually passionate about quite a number of things. Nabi's interest in the world was slowly but surely piqued as she hung out with someone like Cecil. At times, when Nabi recalls what Cecil said about crows, she'll subconsciously feel like the crow suits Cecil more than it does her.
Nabi had already displayed astonishing maturity and composure when she was at a really young age. To her Single father whose job was to protect his boss' life, it was truly heartwarming to have such a sensible daughter who had mentioned more than once during his short trips home that she would like to help him out. He thanked her for the thought and stroked her head, telling her that he was contented and didn't need anything.
One day, as Nabi grew older, her father saw his boss' beautiful, pampered daughter and suddenly realized that aside from daily necessities, it was time to buy Nabi some things she liked. But when he asked her what she wanted, she simply shook her head and said she was already contented with what he had given and didn't need anything else. It eventually dawned on him, after several such conversations, that his daughter didn't appear to have any desire. It was as though she couldn't find anything she liked or anything she wanted to do, and... she didn't seem happy.
This realization left him paralyzed with shame and regret. Meanwhile, Nabi was confused, wondering if she had upset her father by not wanting anything. After all, he would be happy in the past, and she genuinely had nothing she wanted. As she mulled over what to do, she abruptly remembered her teacher mentioning last week that the school would be setting up an art contest, and so she told her father she would like to attend art lessons.
Overjoyed by her request, the man wasted no time purchasing a truckload of art supplies, and Nabi quickly mastered her drawing skills, though she was unable to be creative and imaginative, nor was she inspired to use colors at all. All she could do was continuously replicate real-life sights on paper in grayscale. Before she knew it, sketching became part of her daily routine, and she seemed to have finally found a hobby.
After so many years, Nabi's ability to use knives has long become as brilliant as what she could do with pencils. Like any other day, she went to the art store to get supplies she needed when she, for some odd reason, picked up a box of watercolor paint. Although it wasn't the same brand that her father bought her back then, she felt that it could help her paint the skies she saw a few days ago through The Eternal's window. Perhaps before long, The Eternal's conductor will be able to receive an all-new artwork.
I'm Nabi, tasked to assist you with your work. Orders, please.
I'm not a very good assistant... but I can handle being a bodyguard.
You won't give me orders?... Then, just assign me tasks. You're unique, but I hope you won't become like Mr. Hayabusa, constantly leaving me to make decisions on my own.
This weapon feels good in my hands, and more importantly, it's light and easy to use. Suits me well.
Cecil? Yes, we're... friends. She's the first friend I made after arriving at Night Chains... She's a good person.
I draw sketches sometimes. Drawing requires some quiet personal space. But don't worry. It won't interfere with my work. My orders take precedence over my personal needs.
That's when Cecil and I first became friends. She gave me a crow as a gift. It's a clever little thing and even helps me fetch my slippers. If I get the chance, I'll bring it to show you.
My father was my only family. He sacrificed himself to protect Mr. Jose. Mr. Jose has never mistreated me. Maybe he hopes I can protect Mr. Hayabusa like my father did, but Mr. Hayabusa seems to dislike me doing that.
I don't have grand dreams or ambitions. Life is good as it is now... but that's about it.
My combat skills incorporate many styles, honed through constant practice and sparring. I want to become stronger, but I don't know what for. I just feel like having a goal to achieve would make it easier and not have to think too much about it.
Cecil loves getting me to test the perfumes she makes, saying my scent is the lightest and can showcase the effects of the products well. I can't smell the differences in everyone's scent, but I'm glad to see her happy.
I've only been sketching things that exist so far... but I'm getting close to the idea of creating something beautiful. Though, I can't draw anything specific yet. It's just a sudden impulse.
Want me to teach you how to dance...? Sorry, I can't. No, it's not that I don't want to teach you, but I believe dance is an expression from the heart. It's hard to convey through structured tutorials. Next time, I can invite you to the club to watch me dance.
When I first came here, I thought you would use me as a weapon. But I get it now that you and the others treat me as a companion. It's an unfamiliar feeling... but I'll get used to it.
At your command.
Keep moving.
Do not be complacent before it's absolutely over.
On it. I can handle it.
Slash!
Retreat for now, all of you.
It was my negligence...
Done. Save the extra praise. I was only following orders.
